Before Worship

5 prayers across all traditions

Prayers said before worship — to prepare the heart and gather attention before entering into prayer or praise.

A Prayer for Unity in the Church

Holy God,

Your Church contains people of different cultures, traditions, generations, experiences, and perspectives. Teach us to let these differences deepen our understanding rather than become reasons for hostility.

Where disagreement exists, give us humility. Where division has caused wounds, bring healing. Where pride prevents reconciliation, soften our hearts.

Help Christians recognise what we share while treating differences with honesty, patience, and grace.

May we be known not for the arguments that divide us, but for the love with which we follow Christ and serve the world together.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

A Prayer for Pastors and Church Leaders

Lord Jesus Christ,

Bless those called to shepherd, teach, encourage, and serve Your people.

Give pastors and church leaders wisdom greater than their own understanding, humility when others look to them for answers, and compassion for every person entrusted to their care.

Strengthen them when ministry becomes tiring. Protect time for their families, friendships, prayer, and rest.

Keep their leadership rooted not in recognition or status, but in service.

May their words point toward truth, their actions demonstrate love, and their lives encourage others to walk more closely with You.

Amen.

A Prayer Before a Church Service

Holy God,

As we gather in worship, turn our hearts toward You. Quiet our distractions, release us from the burdens we have carried through the doors, and prepare us to receive what You would teach us today.

Bless every prayer spoken, every song offered, every word proclaimed, and every person gathered here. Welcome especially those who arrive lonely, uncertain, grieving, or searching for hope.

May we leave this place renewed in faith and ready to carry Your love beyond these walls.

In Christ's name,

Amen.

A Prayer for the Church

Lord Jesus Christ,

Strengthen Your Church to be a place of welcome, truth, mercy, and hope. Teach us to serve rather than seek recognition, to listen before judging, to forgive as we have been forgiven, and to recognise the dignity of every person who comes through our doors.

Give wisdom to pastors and leaders, compassion to those who care for others, courage to those who speak for justice, and willing hearts to everyone called to serve.

May our churches be known not merely by the words we proclaim, but by the love we practise.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

Prayer Before Worship

Lord,

We gather now in your name.

We come from different places,

carrying different things —

some of us full of joy,

some of us barely holding on.

As we enter this time of worship,

set aside what does not belong here.

Quiet the distracted mind.

Open the closed heart.

Soften the defensive spirit.

Let us not go through the motions,

but truly encounter you —

the living God,

present in this room,

waiting to be known.

Meet us here.

Amen.
